Forsaken

The chill shadow begins
on the outside -
friendless as an echo,
solitary and ignored.

The darkness widens,
creeps further in -
begins to feel deliberate,
malign. A sense of:
now deserted,
abandoned and disowned.

Then inexorably falls
the night without dawn,
the cold without warm -
now hopeless, worthless,
destitute,
alone.

"My God, my God -
why have You forsaken me?"
